The Crow Wing County Bomb Squad is a joint effort between the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office and the Brainerd Police Department. The Crow Wing County Bomb Squad was formed in 1978 and is currently 1 of 4 Bomb Squads in the state of Minnesota. There are approximately 460 Bomb Squads nation-wide with 3,100 active personnel trained. In 2019 the Bomb Squad responded to 39 incidents in the area of coverage responsibility.
The Crow Wing County Bomb Squad has a jurisdiction that covers the northern half of Minnesota. There are currently 5 members on the bomb squad who are all hazardous device certified through completing a six week F.B.I. Hazardous Device School. Members of the bomb squad are also trained in advanced demolition breaching and Hazmat technician response. The bomb squad works closely with the Crow Wing County Tactical Response Team and the Crisis Negotiation team. The operation of the bomb squad is largely funded through federal grants.
